DON’T KNOW WHY

I waited ’til I saw the sun
Don’t know why I didn’t come
I left You by the house of fun
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But You’ll be on my mind forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I’ll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

My heart is drenched in wine
But you’ll be on my side forever

BREAK

Something has to make you run
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come

Interpretation:

Verse 1:

I waited ’til I saw the sun
Don’t know why I didn’t come
I left You by the house of fun
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come

The singer didn’t question what life was all about until encountering the light from the sun— hearing the Gospel. Mt 5:14-16 (Christians do not have any light of their own but reflect the light of Christ 2 Co 4:4. When we live by the Spirit we are like a full moon reflecting all of God’s light. Unfortunately, some Christians are new moon’s at best). She waited until she saw the sun—a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. However, she didn’t fully embrace the invitation from God, leaving Him by the “house of fun” to return to a life of worldly pleasures.

Verse 2:

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

The break of day is another opportunity for a new beginning and a spiritual awakening. Through God’s people, we are granted many opportunities to discover the love Jesus has for us. The desire to fly away represents the human longing for escape from the pain and struggles of this life. Instead of yielding to God our Rock, the singer kneels in the sand Mt 7:26, (unwittingly captive to the Evil One, only to catch teardrops in her hand, which personify the emotional pain and emptiness that people experience when they try to find fulfillment outside of Him.

Chorus:

My heart is drenched in wine
But you’ll be on my mind forever

The singer’s heart is drenched in wine, a symbol of the worldly pleasures that leave us empty and unsatisfied. Despite this, she recognizes that God has been calling her throughout her life, and she longs for something more permanent than the fleeting pleasures of this world.

Verse 3:

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I’ll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

The singer believes that if she could connect with God, whom she sees as being far across the sea Ps 139:9,10, she would experience true fulfillment and joy. However, she fears that it may be too late for her—a bag of bones has no spiritual component to it, just the physical skeleton, and that she will live out her life alone on the barren highway to nowhere.

Chorus

My heart is drenched in wine
But you’ll be on my side forever

She repeats her lament of hopelessness, yet knowing that God has always been there for her. Heb 13:5

Verse 4:

Something has to make you run
I don’t why I didn’t come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come
I don’t know why I didn’t come

The singer feels helpless to save herself, yet she has ignored the wooing’s of the Holy Spirit many times and states that she doesn’t know why she didn’t fully embrace the love of God.

Conclusion:

The sad reality is that many people search for meaning and purpose in life, but they often turn to worldly pleasures and distractions that ultimately leave them feeling empty and lost. However, the good news of the Gospel is that God desires all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth 2 Pe 3:9. He sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins Ro 4:25 so that we can be reconciled to Him 2 Co 5:19 and receive the gift of eternal life through faith in Him Jn 3:16. Don’t let the search for fulfillment and joy lead you down a path of emptiness and despair. Turn to God today and experience the abundant love life Jn 10:10 He has in store for you.

Bible Truth:

Remember, God is full of mercy and grace, but there comes a point when His grace can reach its limit, and only judgment remains. In the story of Lot and his family, angels seized their hands to rescue them from the impending destruction, with one strict warning—not to look back. However, when Lot’s wife chose to glance back at the world they were leaving behind, she was transformed into a pillar of salt.

Why salt? In Matthew 5:13, Jesus states, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Salt, in this context, symbolizes a metaphorical meaning. It represents the transformative and preserving influence that believers should have on the world. Just as salt enhances and adds flavor, Christians are called to impact society positively. However, if they lose their distinctiveness and fail to fulfill their purpose, they become ineffective and are of no value.

Hence, Lot’s wife, by looking back and clinging to the world she was leaving, demonstrated a lack of faith and obedience. Her transformation into a pillar of salt serves as a illustration of the consequences of disregarding God’s warning and turning away from His purposes.
