Phl 1:11

Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me: the name Onesimus means useful. Paul stated that before Onesimus became a Christian, he was useless to Philemon as he escaped to gain his freedom. In reality, he met Paul and became a Christian, which is the ultimate freedom—from Satan and the bondage of sin. Now Paul declared that Onesimus was useful to both Philemon and Paul. Onesimus had become Paul’s helper, which was beneficial to Paul and he was sending Onesimus back to Philemon. Out of love Paul had asked that Philemon would return Onesimus to Paul, so that it would benefit the kingdom of God and thereby benefit both Paul and Philemon.

Application: what benefits ourselves only benefits ourselves. However, what benefits the kingdom benefits God and everyone in the kingdom of God. We must work for the kingdom and not ourselves to be truly useful 2 Ti 2:20,21.
