1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Gen 1:1,2
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Jn 3:5
Born of:
(1) water (this occurs in the amniotic sac of a mother) = natural life
The sea or the water described in Genesis 1:2 (the surface of the deep) is a picture of God’s judgment on fallen mankind. 6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea Mt 18:6. In the physical realm, man starts life in the water of the amniotic sac, whereas spiritually he begins life in judgment, (Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them Jn 3:36), in the water of the sea with the Holy Spirit hovering overhead Gen 1:2.
Man desires his independency and rages against God. 12 Woe to the many nations that rage—they rage like the raging sea. Woe to the peoples who roar—they roar like the roaring of great waters Isa 17:12. In darkness—lacking God’s enlightenment Lk 1:79, formless and empty 1 Pe 1:18—living in chaos, lacking spiritual structure Gal 4:19 and without any meaning or purpose in life Ecc 1:2.
Natural man’s condition is analogous to ordinary water whereas spiritual man is likened to the supernatural (living Jn 4:10) water. 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life Jn 4:13,14.” The Holy Spirit is this living water Jn 7:37,38,39.
The Holy Spirit is symbolized by “oil”. 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David… 1 Sa 16:13
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth… 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. 1 Jn 2:20,27
(2) Spirit/Oil Man must be born from above (born again) 3Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again Jn 3:3. This new birth comes about by faith in the forgiving blood shed by Jesus 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith Ro 3:25.
In the natural realm, God painted for us a picture of Genesis 1:2. This is symbolized by oil and water. The oil is less dense and therefore comes to the surface separated from the water since the water is denser.
An emulsifier binds oil and water-based components together.
An emulsifier is capable of dispersing one liquid into another immiscible (one that doesn’t mix) liquid. This means that while oil (which attracts dirt) doesn’t naturally mix with water, soap can join oil/dirt in such a way that it can be removed. Emulsifier link
In the spiritual realm water represents lost man; the oil, the Holy Spirit hovering above the water (not being able to mix because of man’s sin and God’s holiness 2 Co 6:14); and the emulsifier, the blood of Jesus.
The blood of Jesus joins the sinner and God, the two becoming one 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church…Eph 5:31,32. Emulsifiers are placed in baked goods to prevent them from spoiling. Jesus’ blood cleanses sinful man eternally so that God can accept him as judicially righteous because Jesus has paid for his sins. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus Ro 3:25,26.
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him 2 Co 5:21.
