What is a sound from heaven? It is hearing a word from God. After Jacob had deceived his brother, Esau planned to kill him so he fled to Harran Gen 27:42,43. During his travels Jacob had a dream in which God promised him many descendants and ownership of the land he was on, and that he would be a blessing to the world Gen 28:12,13,14,15. That was Jacob’s sound from heaven. Jacob then made a vow to God that if God protected him, he would make the Lord his God Gen 28:20, 21, 22.

Nathanael was amazed that Jesus knew he was sitting under a fig tree Jn 1:48 but his word from God was that he would see much greater miracles from heaven that Jesus would perform Jn 1:50,51.

Peter was praying when his sound came from the Holy Spirit, in the form of speaking in tongues, which saw about three thousand people place their faith in Christ that day Ac 2:41.

Elijah was suicidal, fearing Jezebel 1 Ki 19:2,3, so the Lord told him to stand on the mountain and God would pass by him 1 Ki 19:9-11. He watched for the Lord but did not see him in the wind, earthquake or fire 1 Ki 19:11,12, but finally recognized the Lord in a gentle whisper. What was Elijah’s Word? God had just allowed Elijah to defeat all four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal 1 Ki 18:22,40 miraculously, at Mount Carmel, by sending fire to burn the sacrifices 1 Ki 18:38,39. But after hearing that Jezebel was going to kill him, he forgot His Protector. The Lord realized that the great miracle did not prevent Elijah from fearing, so the Lord was not in a mighty wind, earthquake and fire for these kinds of miraculous powers would not help Elijah overcome fear. The gentle whisper was a reminder to Elijah that the Lord was close to him always and He only needed to whisper for Elijah to hear him. It is much better to know that the Lord is always close to us than to know His mighty powers. That day Elijah’s sound was that he did not have to fear, for the Lord is always near Jos 1:9; Zep 3:17; Mt 28:20; Ac 17:27;  Ro 8:38,39; Heb 13:5; Jn 14:16,17.
