RELATIONSHIP

Day 4If God Himself has existed in perfect, loving relationship for all eternity within the Trinity, why did He create us and what does that mean for how we should live our daily lives?

Relationship is at the very heart of who God is. Everything in life that holds together: families, friendships, marriages, churches, even your own sense of purpose finds its deepest meaning in the fact that God is not a lonely single person. God has always been three Persons in perfect, joyful, loving relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Before anything was created, God was already “us.” The Trinity was already enjoying relationship. When God creates humanity, He is not inventing relationship, He is sharing the relationship that has always existed inside Him.

In John 17:26, Jesus is praying to the Father. He wants the same love that has existed between the Father and the Son for all eternity to now flow into us through the Holy Spirit. This verse shows the Trinity’s relationship is not closed off, it is open and welcoming.

The above verses teach us that God is all about relationship. The Trinity has always been united by perfect love. God exists in an eternal loving relationship.

Application of the Trinity
You were created for relationship because God is relationship. Loneliness, isolation, or broken relationships hurt so deeply because they go against the core of who you (and God) are. The “glue of life” is relationship, starting with your relationship with God, then with others.

Your highest calling is to live in the love of the Trinity. Jesus prayed that the very same love the Father has for the Son would be in you. That means: You don’t have to earn God’s love, you are invited into the love the Trinity already enjoys. Your relationships with people should reflect the Trinity’s love, unity without losing individuality, service without selfishness, joy in giving and receiving.

Daily Application:
Start your day by remembering: I am not alone. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in perfect relationship, and through Jesus, they have welcomed me in. Then ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with that same Trinitarian love so you can love your family, friends, co-workers, and even difficult people with patience, kindness, and unity.

The Trinity didn’t create us because God was bored or lonely. He created us so that the eternal love flowing between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit could overflow into us, making relationship the true “glue of life.” Because God is relationship, we are made for relationship with Him and with one another.
